Great Western Hotel
Editorial
The Great Western Hotel is in serious beef country. You know this because they've planted a replica cow on the hotel's roof. They also have their very own rodeo at the back of the venue. While this sort of dedication to bovine majesty might raise eyebrows in other cities, Rockhampton is officially recognised as Australia's beef capital - a cow on the roof is written in construction conditions in the town charter.
Giant (indoor) rodeo aside, the venue boasts four separate bars, an award-winning steakhouse, gaming saloon, a retail store and a 2000-capacity live music venue. It might not look it from the outside, but it really is a sprawling roadhouse. On that note, the decor holds true to the Great Western's origins. Around since 1878 the fit-out offers a modern take on traditional country and western themes. Think: saloon bar with mounted animals on the walls, a mix of polished wood and brass fittings and genuine cowboy types in genuine cowboy hats. If you want authenticity, you'll find it in spades.
Beer is definitely the drink of choice in Rockhampton. While the bars offer a selection of wines and spirits, asking for a Mint Julep probably isn't the best idea. Once you do have a few drinks under your 10-gallon hat you can try your luck on the mechanical bull or take in some live music. As far as country style venues go, the Great Western Hotel has surprisingly strong entertainment options and character to spare.
