Kathmandu Newa Chhe'n
Editorial
This adorable restaurant, located at the top of the Paddington restaurant strip, is worth a visit for the decor alone. Housed in an old converted Queenslander, Kathmandu has a cosy feel to it, sporting brightly painted walls and small, intimate rooms for private functions. Upon entering the restaurant, you'll find yourself in the main dining room, a small and colourful space decked out with cushions and prayer flags. This opens onto a cosy function area featuring low-set tables and cushion seating. For the stiff of limb the green room offers comfortable wooden seats, colourful tablecloths and gilded mirrors.
Owner Suraj Shrestha is also the chef and has a background in Nepalese cooking which began when he was a child in Nepal. He has always derived a joy from cooking and previously worked at the popular Himalayan Cafe in Brunswick Street. The menu has a variety of traditional Nepalese dishes including the main meal of dhal bhat, which is taken twice a day in Nepal - morning and evening. Highlights include the sherpa chicken cooked in a creamy sauce with coriander, lime leaf and a sprinkle of lemon, or the garlic macha: fish cooked in a creamy garlic and herb sauce.
