Nestled in New Farm's bustling Merthyr Road is the cheerful Chinese dine-in or takeaway addition, Merthyr Cafe. This restaurant is a favourite among locals in the area, and busy lunchtime clientele find it a great alternative to some of the more expensive eateries in New Farm. The cuisine is traditionally Chinese and is served at a fair price. Patrons can enjoy a lunch special for only $7, which includes an entree as well as a main to help stretch your dollar further. However, while the dishes are very affordable indeed, the restaurant's popularity is not just owed to the prices.
The menu consists of many typical Chinese dishes including beef in black bean sauce, Peking duck and spring rolls. A house special that has proved quite popular among diners is the steamed scallops, served fresh and hot in their shells. For those familiar with New Farm, it is a short hop from the Merthyr shopping village and cafe area. For a friendly atmosphere and subtle, authentically prepared Chinese cuisine, The Merthyr Cafe is well worth checking out for lunch or dinner.
