The Alibi Room
Editorial
The Alibi Room is as much a homage to owner, James Straker's, obsessions as it is a bar. Opened in 2003 to fulfil his lifelong dream of bringing a Tiki Lounge to Brisbane, it's become a local institution in recent years. One that attracts touring bands, suits and local hipsters. Although the furnishings in the main (upstairs) bar are simple enough, the avalanche of pop culture artefacts will keep you distracted for days. Straker used to own a retro toy shop back in the day and you'll find a significant portion of his collection now lives in the Alibi Room. Meanwhile, the Tiki bar is downstairs. Here you'll find a 'very classy', indoor waterfall alongside a whole lot of bamboo furnishings and an actual Tiki bar, as well as a lot of Elvis memorabilia on the wall. It's trashy, but in the best possible way.
The drinks selection at Alibi is as extensive as the toy selection. While they don't offer tap beer, there is a whole fridge of imports to choose from. The cocktail menu is huge and encompasses a full Tiki selection alongside all the usual suspects. If you're looking for a drink with little umbrellas served out of a coconuts, this is the place. Also, there's a full menu on offer to help soak up the booze. Drop in on Tuesdays and you can eat $2 tacos and drink cheap margaritas until you feel funny.
With old Johnny Cash records playing throughout the day (alongside a bit of punk), it's not hard to see why Alibi is a favourite with Brisbane's hipster community and a hangout for touring bands.
