Story Bridge Hotel

A Kangaroo Point institution that just gets better with age. One of the best pubs to let loose on a Sunday, or any other day for that matter.

Editorial

The Shelter Bar at the Story Bridge Hotel is my kind of bar. It mixes a laid back feel with a modern and vibrant setting, located by the supports of the Story bridge that unfurls across the Brisbane River. It is clean, well frequented and friendly, and if you’re near Kangaroo Point, coming here is highly recommended.

Opened in 1886, the Story Bridge Hotel has remained under Deery family ownership since 1967, and went through its most recent transformation in 2003 when three main sections were consolidated: the Shelter Bar (a reference to the old WWII bomb shelter that was a popular watering hole here for twenty-odd years), Deery’s Restaurant (a more gastro-pub dining experience) and the Outback Bar & Grill, or, the beer garden.

This place is famous for its ‘signature’ steaks that range from a 200g eye fillet all the way up to 500g t-bone ($35-42 in the Deery; $30-36 in the Shelter). All steaks are grain-fed, aged between two and five months, and come with their own wine or beer recommendation. However, a popular (and ripping value) meal comes in the form of the beef and Guinness pie ($14); it’s hearty and tasty and goes down well with whatever you choose from their extensive collection of local and overseas brews.

If you’re from Brisbane you probably already know about this wonderful pub. It is without doubt one of the best places to go for a Sunday session and watch the footy. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the care taken by the Deery family to cater for every kind of patron is evident.
