This relaxed local maintains its 15-year position on the neighbourhood dining scene of Ascot, serving humble but tasty and fresh food at reasonable prices.

Editorial

Piccolo is aptly named, as it is a small gem located in the back streets of Ascot in a cosy corner of local shops. But what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in all other areas. The service on entering the restaurant is warm and welcoming, putting you immediately at your ease. The ambience and decor is conservative and romantic, with crisp white-clothed tables adorned with a single red rose or white carnation, and warm yellow light filtering from wall-mounted lights.

The menu is an exquisite piece of artwork, which is hardly surprising considering that it was created by Jamie Farrugia. Formerly of Cha Cha Char, he has an impressive history in some of the top Michelin star restaurants in London and Ireland. Choose from such original pieces as terrine of ham, rabbit and parsley with soft-boiled quail egg, cornichons and pommery grain mustard. Mains feature beautiful cuts of fresh meat or fish in rich jus and vegetables, such as the confit of duck with sweet potato dauphinoise, roast beetroot, shallots and a red wine jus. Desserts are a must, with just as much creative fervour devoted to this last section as to the rest of the menu.
