The Zoo
Editorial
The Zoo is a Brisbane institution. We're not just saying that either. Several national bands got their start either up on stage or working behind the bar - sometimes both. The Resin Dogs, Regurgitator and Powderfinger are just a few of the acts to get their start in this refurbished warehouse space.
And it's definitely a 'space'. The Zoo was grungy when it opened in 1991 and it's grungy in 2009. There's a large bar area down one end, a stage down the other and a miscellaneous collection of pool tables and randomly scattered seating in between. It's not much to look at, but then it is primarily a live music venue. Open throughout the week, the Zoo hosts everything from rock acts to live jazz and folksy pop singers.
Since it is a live venue (and most of the bar staff are musicians), the drinks selection concentrates on the basics - beers and spirits. Interestingly, the bar doesn't sell any rum-based beverages - apparently it makes people crazy - and the venue has ghosts. While no comes here for the drinks (or the lack of seating), it is one of Brisbane's longest-running and most-loved live music venues. As the surrounding area gets dragged more upmarket, the Zoo is an endearing reminder of what Fortitude Valley used to be like.
