Rockafellas

Spread over two floors, Rockafellas offers hard dance and R&B fans a place to call their own.

Editorial

Rockafellas is actually two nightclubs in one. While the street-level bar plays hip hop and R&B, downstairs is dedicated to the hardest in hard dance. That tends to make for a rather interesting group of people milling around outside. On any given weekend, you'll find guys and girls in 'phat pants' and singlets alongside fitted baseball caps and throwback jerseys. Once inside, the two crowds pretty much keep to themselves - there's no Jets vs. Sharks action here.

The decor at Rockafellas isn't going to win any awards but it gets the job done. Both levels house a selection of old couches, gaudy murals, bar and dancefloor. You'll also find a couple of pool tables upstairs if you want to prove your worth with a stick. The faded decor isn't really an issue because the lights are always dimmed and Rockafellas is all about the dancefloor, and possibly meeting a special someone.

Keeping in line with all this, the drinks selection sticks with the basics. For the most part you're looking at bottled beers and premixed 'alco-pops'. If you want a scotch and dry then you're best sticking with the canned variety. The young clientele don't mind one bit - they're too busy throwing shapes on the dancefloor or furtively puffing away on cigarettes in the courtyard out the back. Watch out if a DJ drops a dancefloor filler, because folks rush the floor to whip out those killer moves.
