A melange of Asian influence in taste and design.

Editorial

You'll have to look hard to locate this nook which is, as its title suggests, hidden. Locals proud of this cocktail oasis will, however, compensate for its lack of signage. If you can't find this Valley institution: just ask.

For nearly twenty years, inner-urbanites have been finding tranquility inside this mini maze. In 2002, the former restaurant moved just a few doors down to expand its noble enterprise. To wit: to soothe the punters of the sub-tropical north.

The menu here is small and respectable. A pan-Asian theme runs through it as surely as it does the décor of the place. Garuva, however, does not seduce its tranquility seekers by means of food. It's the languid charm of the place that keeps people coming back.

It's generally agreed that the cocktails, which start at the twelve-buck mark and do not exceed $17, are of fine standard. It is also generally agreed that this is a top-notch place for a private bash. Hidden within the hidden tranquility are curtained booths than may host a small group. A larger events space accommodates mass tranquillity.

Here you can enjoy the kind of pace, and position, that the warmer climes demand. In fact, you're perfectly welcome to lounge on a cushioned floor.

Our experience was rather disappointing. The atmosphere was more seedy than tranquil. The dullness of the lighting made it difficult to even see the person in front of you and made you question just exactly what you were being served. At $24 the meals were overpriced. We ordered a Japanese Salad which turned out to be nothing but big chunks of fruit, lettuce leaves, a few nuts covered it what tasted like no more than cream straight out of a bottle and the Turkish Octopus smelled and tasted old which appeared to be compensated for by doubling the quantity. On the up side my ‘Shoes Off’ cocktail was delicious. Over all Garuva Hidden Tranquility Restaurant & Bar has a very unique concept but maybe more thought needs to be put into the design of the place and the menu.
