Fortitude Valley's best kept secret, or simply a carbon-copy English Pub? Grab a pint at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow and decide for yourself.

Editorial

The Elephant and Wheelbarrow is a multi-function venue encompassing a bar, bandroom, backpackers, pokies and beer garden. It's also an exercise in contrasts. While the front bar has a traditional British pub fit-out, the newly introduced beer garden is as sleek and modern as you could hope for. It's also seriously large - the biggest beer garden in the Valley and a social hub on those balmy Friday afternoons when the clock ticks over and the working week comes to an end.

If you prefer a more low-key approach, the front bar does an admirable job recreating ol' blighty. There's the usual mix of fox hunting prints, private booths, green velvet, imported beers and football (soccer) on the plasma screens. While things are nice and quiet during the week, the stage hosts live music on weekends and a jukebox full of pub-rock classics.

Whether you opt for the future-proof beer garden or traditional pub, the drinks selection is geared towards beer, spirits and wine, but mainly beers. There's a good selection of locals and imports available on tap and plenty of bottled options. Bottom line: if you're looking for a casual drink in Fortitude Valley, the refurbished Elephant and Wheelbarrow stands out from the crowd and is an oasis of calm when compared to the nearby mall.
