Belle Epoque
Editorial
Fancy a European holiday but lack the time/finances? Then Belle Epoque can tide you over. A little slice of Paris in downtown Brisbane, it's an overseas trip you can fit into an extended lunch break or boozy dinner. It's also one of the most striking venues surrounding the James Street precinct. While most of the cafes and bars have gone for an overtly modern feel, Belle Epoque's interior is based on a traditional French Bistro. In other words, rich leathers, booth seating, ornate lighting, huge mirrors and ambient lighting - all very lovely.
While it serves primarily as a restaurant, Belle Epoque also features a classic 1920's bar counter and ample seating for those just wishing to sample the wine list. Comprised entirely of French imports, it's as impressive as the decor and features selections you won't find elsewhere in Brisbane. That said, the prices are actually quite reasonable and while you can easily drop a thousand dollars, bottles start at around the $50 mark and they have several options available by the glass. Meanwhile, the full drinks menu runs for 16 pages and encompasses everything from the aforementioned wines to proper French champagne, cocktails, imported beers and a selection of top-shelf spirits.
With live jazz on Sundays, Champagne Club on Tuesdays and a bustling atmosphere throughout the week, Belle Epoque is a welcome addition to the area and a must visit for anyone interested in wines.
