Finnigan's Chin

As Irish pubs go, this place has it all. Actually, it hasn't, but you'll have to drop in to find that out for yourself.

Editorial

Finnigan's Chin in Carindale isn't the most convincing ??Irish Pub'. While they've got the basics right - Irish name, suitably ??old world' furniture, usual brick-a-brack on the walls - they seem to have skimped on the details. Giant Jageriester advertisements don't really sell the concept. Neither do the Smirnoff Blacks stacked up behind the counter or the posters for Coopers Ale.

Admittedly, the place is housed in one of those boutique ?courtyards' they like to build adjacent to large shopping centres. Even so, it's a little disconcerting to walk down a hallway marked ?toilet' and suddenly find yourself in an upmarket cafe with a tropical theme. And if you ignore the cafe and turn left you'll walk straight into the lobby of a four star hotel. It's all a bit strange.

So, what's the actual bar like? Well, it's small, dimly lit, and a bit cramped. Which, if it's 30 degrees outside and you've just been shopping for homewares for the past few hours is actually a pleasant change. There's a large booth in one corner of the room which can house 6 or so people, a small stage for the local cover bands in another corner and the usual assortment of ?whisky barrel' tables scattered throughout. Drinks are very reasonably priced.

While the Irish are famed for their hospitality, management don't seem to share the same enthusiasm. Prominent signs throughout the venue remind people that workwear, boots and hats are all banned. Given that Carindale is actually quite a wealthy suburb these notices seem a tad out of place. Does the shopping centre have gangs of marauding workmen in Blundstones?

So, Finnigan's Chin Carindale ... If you're in need of a dark room in which to drink a beer and watch the football, then it'll do the job. If you're looking for an ?authentic' Irish Pub experience, there are probably better options out there.
