Ponder the philosophies of Oscar Wilde over a flavoursome meal in this cosy venue with edgy decor and lively quotes from the man himself.

Editorial

Oscar Wilde once said: “After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one's own relatives.” Although I wouldn’t go that far, I can attest that dinner in this cosy restaurant bearing his name will enhance your disposition, leaving you with a serene smile and contented air. Located in Brisbane’s CBD, Wilde’s is stylish with small, chic tables and a cosy semi-alfresco setting in which to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is an intimate feel about the place and from the balcony tables you can enjoy clear views of the night (or light) sky while pondering the Oscar Wilde quotes adorning the walls.

We began with the salt and pepper calamari (always a favourite) which was tender with a light crisp coating. A main course of Atlantic salmon (marinated with citrus zest, wrapped in crisp filo pastry and resting on a braised fennel and cucumber salad drizzled with a lime butter cream) was divine: the filo pastry was crisp, each mouthful of fish moist and tender with the occasional explosion of flavour from the citrus zest. And it awakened me to a love of fennel that I never knew I had – I’ve been trying to recreate Peter Phelan’s recipe ever since. Desserts looked tempting, but generous portions mean I must look forward to trying them on another visit.
