One of two outlets in Brisbane, the Spring Hill premises of the Tibetan Kitchen offers traditional food from three rich culinary traditions. Tibetan, Sherpa and Nepalese cuisine are all available, and can be eaten in or taken away. The restaurant is decorated splendidly inside and out. Artefacts and images from all three cultures are festooned across the walls and ceilings. There are Tibetan paintings on the walls and windows, and a magnificent painting of a temple dominates the external façade. This adds to a casual feel and great sense of fun. The Tibetan Kitchen is a vibrant spot which provides a friendly welcome and party atmosphere.
The restaurant focuses on providing good-quality yet affordable food. Three chefs work simultaneously, each specialising in one of the three types of cuisine. The food is like a carefully balanced blend of Chinese and Indian cooking. Mild, medium and hot curries are offered, as well as noodle and dumpling dishes. The Tibetan classic Aloo Phing, Masu ra T-Momo is a popular favourite, with lamb, rice noodles and marinated spicy potato. The menu also features the scalding hot “Mount Everest soup”, perfect preparation for some amateur mountaineering… or just for cold evenings. The food is inexpensive, and served with a smile, making the Tibetan Kitchen a great informal eatery for travellers and residents alike.
