Sachi on Edward Japanese Restaurant
Editorial
Up a flight of polished marble stairs flanked by shimmering mirrors, a chic club or a boutique fashion store could await, but Sachi is far more subdued. The restaurant serves as a tranquil retreat from the CBD bustle, Japanese style, sheltered from busy Edward Street by its insulated upstairs location. Inside, it's an attractive, contemporary space, full of light and ornamented with tasteful Japanese decor. To one side of the room is a small teppanyaki bar, although it's not in use every night.
A very large menu ranges from basic katsu and teriyaki dishes to more adventurous forays into Japanese cuisine. You could easily make a meal out of a selection of sides and entrees: be sure to order plenty of the edamame (steamed whole soy beans) and chawan mushi (a delicate savoury egg custard with mushrooms, bamboo shoots and chicken). There's a wide variety of sushi and sashimi on offer; choose from individual hand rolls, or assorted platters that could include yellow tail, octopus, shimesaba (marinated mackerel), ark shell and scallop. Tempura Morton Bay bugs are favoured by the regulars; Sachi also specialises in shioyaki (slices of fish rubbed with salt and cooked over a very hot grill).
Service from the young staff is patchy; value for money is excellent.
