Platform Bar
Editorial
There's always a bit of a prestigious air about old hotels in metropolitan city train stations, and the grand old Grand Central Hotel in Brisbane is no different. The hotel's Platform Bar is a wonderful old saloon-style haunt downstairs, and is well worth a visit while you wait for your train.
There's a real sense of history here, from the plaque mounted on the wall announcing Platform Bar as the regular meeting place of RAF Squadron 23 since as far back as 1937, to the various photographic portraits of Brisbane's founding fathers scattered liberally around the venue.
Large balconies offer wonderful views of the hustle and bustle in the station below. The ambience is relaxed and the place looks pretty spick, with polished wooden floorboards and a long, dark bar, giving a touch of class to proceedings. The bar staff are fairly attentive too, making it a great place to park for an afternoon.
Platform attracts a swarming crowd of people passing through the station, as well as several local business types, so expect a scattering of suits. There's an ok beer selection on tap, and a decent boutique bottle choice too, as the place is one of Brisbane's few dedicated beer bars.
