O'Malley's Irish Pub
Editorial
Tucked away underneath Brisbane's busiest shopping district, Mick O'Malley's provides a welcome respite from the commerce above. Subdued lighting, private booths and narrow hallways all contribute to a warm and intimate environment. It's not unlike stepping into a rabbit warren when you first make your way down the stairs - and the lack of windows ensures there are no awkward views of palm trees or the Brisbane CBD to ruin the illusion.
Decor is the traditional Irish pub fare: a mix of exposed timber beams, green walls, solid wood furniture and a selection of mounted posters for Kilkenny and whiskies you've never heard of before. The staff, meanwhile, all look like they could pass for Irish.
Pop in during the day and you can watch the football (soccer) on the numerous Plasma televisions. If that doesn't hold your interest there are also televisions playing ?classic' videoclips - think Sonia Dada, Madness, Stevie Wonder, etc. Hardly groundbreaking, but it beats listening to an endless loop of U2, The Corrs and The Cranberries. Live bands play Friday and Saturday nights.
Being an Irish pub, there's not much in the way of cocktails on offer - as the sign on the wall reads: ?We serve pots and pints'. Presumably, the selection extends beyond that, but don't come expecting world class Mojitos or anything particularly outlandish.
There might be a million Irish pubs out there, but Mick O'Malleys manages to stand out in a crowded market. A great location (directly underneath the Queen St Mall) combined with genuinely charming layout and decor makes this one Irish pub well worth visiting. And not just on St Patrick's Day.
