City Gardens Cafe Functions & Catering
Editorial
A green, quiet retreat between the banks of the Brisbane River and Parliament House, the City Botanic Gardens can feel remarkably isolated, if not for the tops of CBD skyscrapers poking out behind trees in the distance. Still, the city feels miles away when you're settling down to high tea on the veranda of City Gardens Cafe, once the caretaker's cottage and now a lovely, rustic eatery surrounded by lush foliage that's supremely peaceful except for the occasional lawnmower snarling by. Very family friendly, and a popular wedding venue, it offers indoor dining, but sit under the marquee and you'll often be joined by the garden's friendly bird life.
The cafe does breakfasts and high tea and also offers a varied lunch menu. It's a little on the pricey side but serves are generous and the food is fresh and well presented. You can start with the very good antipasto plate or a roast vegetable filo tartlet with whipped lemon fetta, pesto, rocket and balsamic. For mains try the chilli prawns and squid tossed with bok choy, spinach, egg noodles and Vietnamese mint vinaigrette, or the fish of the day with warm new potato, rocket, caper and olive salad and roast capsicum mayo. Tea and scones are the perfect way to finish.
