Calypso Bar & Cafe
Editorial
All the better for enjoying scrumptious pizzas, and tasty chilli, washed down with an impressive wine and cocktail list that keeps the laid back crowds happy. All wines are offered by the glass too, a rarity these days.
Relaxation is key, with a cosy, almost ramshackle feel to the place. This is the kind of spot that lazy Sunday sessions were made for, where the weekend spins out just that little bit longer into the sunshine and everyone can pretend, for a moment, that Monday morning isn't calling. The back decking area provides ample shading from the rays if you've overindulged a little too much.
Live entertainment in the form of local bands keeps the crowds entertained at the weekends, while the general music policy is pretty retro. Long bench seats and overgrown sofas promote communal chatter, and the younger crowd tends to be fairly relaxed. So slip into something comfortable and settle in for the evening.

I can only disagree with the editorial review. I went to the Calypso bar to watch Jahbutu, a great caribbean duo performing calypso and other caribbean music. I enjoyed it so much I decided to go back with friends two weeks later. However, the bar had accepted a booking from a birthday party and we were not allowed inside the bar, even to use the dance floor! Caribbean vibe certainly not... I can't imagine a caribbean venue banning patrons from dancing to good music.... so beware, if you visit this venue you may find yourself banned from truly enjoying yourself as the bar clearly values short term business over a long term following.

I must disagree with (Music Lover). This bar is also used for Functions. They offer great deals with free venue hire, platters etc. Yes this may be dissapointing to someone who wanted to come in for a dance, but it's a function venue and bar. I have booked our wedding party there in November. They are blocking off most of the bar and dance floor for us so we can have a private function. This doesn't only happen at Calypso, many venues do this and I think it's very acceptable. The staff are super friendly, the atmosphere is very relaxed. If you turned up and it was closed off due to a function, you would simply have to pick one of the other great venues on Caxton street to go have a dance. Not that bad really, is it?
