Junk Bar
Editorial
Like Auntie Dea Dea's sitting room (if Auntie Dea Dea were fond of a Brandy Alexander and quick Fox Trot along the bar), Junk is reminiscent of an era when ladies with names like Gertie, Flo and Dolly disguised hedonistic abandon behind a twin-set facade. The term 'speakeasy' comes to mind when describing Junk, for the interior is laden with vintage collectibles by way of plush furnishings, mounted stag heads, fringed lamp shades and decoratively patterned rugs and wallpapers. All of this is set within a tiny, dim-lit, hard to identify shopfront and generates crowd-envy among a new breed of Brisbane's small-bar lovers.
Junk is the kind of place for those who abhor the watering holes found more commonly in The Valley or other more commercial destinations typical of local drinking culture. It is a place of peaceful retreat by comparison - yet goes off quite nicely on a nightly basis (Wed - Sun) to the sounds of classic vinyl spun with love by the owners. The drinks list is plentiful, with a few signature cocktails (around $14) to reflect the mood of the interior.
For food, the concept is great. If you are feeling peckish just pop into the neighbouring Chinese or fish and chip shop and they will bundle up a most satisfying treat for you take back into the bar. That's a sign of a civilised community indeed. That a bar like Junk has popped up in a place like Ashgrove is also a sign of a city maturing - responding to diversity and offering alternatives to the cringe of the suburbs.
