Sandbar

As the sun sets on Arafura Sea, you barely even notice the upward drift of your bar tab.

Editorial

At 90 strong, Sandbar's cocktail list is easily the city's most comprehensive. In the beer drinking capital of the nation and, at some counts, the world, this is no mean feat. Nonetheless, the proprietors of this glossy establishment have set about weaning Darwin off its preferred nourishment. The town is drinking its way through all 90 of these well-balanced potions.

We're starting with the custard tart martini.

And then, we're dragging our custard tart silhouettes out to the Sandbar's deck. Inside the plush but uncluttered bar, you could be in any urban bar. Outside, though, there is no mistaking that this, after all, is the Top End. And, goodness, it feels good to drink in the sights of Capricornia just as much as it feels good to drink in a custard tart martini.

From noon until four on weekends, Sandbar offers afternoon tea with a Territorian spin. Actually, they call it High Tea, as so many so wrongly do. But we can forgive them for their misuse as the dainties are so lovely. And, the Tea with a Twist offers us the option of a rather wonderful teapot cocktail instead of plain old, non-alcoholic cha.

Of course, if for some odd reason you decide a custard tart in liquefied form ain't for you, this smart bar does serve beer.
