Walk into Bahn Thai and you will be met by gold, glittering Buddhas, cascades of faux orchids, lanterns and mirrors and beautifully set tables. Bahn Thai occupies a waterside position at Cullen Bay marina and boasts a sizable shaded deck where diners catch both breeze and view. Waitstaff garbed in Thai costume add to the Asian aura. Bahn Thai is well regarded by locals and fully licensed – a good choice for Top End visitors in search of romantic alfresco dining.
The food is standard Thai at moderate prices. Ginger, chilli, basil, lemongrass and coconut flavours meld with fresh veggies, rice, seafood and meats. Make sure to specify whether you’d like your dishes mild, medium or hot. Classics include spring rolls, fish cakes, pad Thai, red and green curries and crispy whole fried fish. Local and imported seafood is a desirable feature, as is a special kids’ menu. Try the coconut milk soup with chicken and vegetables for a mild but tangy starter, follow it up with a spicy curry on steamed rice. For a lighter meal, nibble on a beef salad or the traditional Thai paw paw salad. Bahn Thai offers special pineapple fried rice made to a secret recipe! The restaurant caters for weddings, birthdays, seminars and other occasions and can design a menu to suit. Traditional Thai entertainment is also available, along with karaoke, singers and dancers.
