Thailicious

places|nt|darwin|thailicious
With an open-air mid-city rooftop location, cheerful vibe, exotic decor and excellent Thai food, Darwin’s Thailicious restaurant is a Top End favourite.

Editorial

At sunset Thailicious unfurls roll-up walls to reveal a rooftop restaurant exuding the aromatic fragrances of glorious Thai cuisine. At the heart of Darwin’s backpacker strip in bustling Mitchell Street, Thailicious maintains a busy clientele of local fans and intrepid travellers. Catching the tropical breeze it's perfect for a leisurely dinner in both wet and dry seasons. Choose from rooftop tables open to the sky, seats under the awning with fans or, for the ultimate in relaxed dining, select the floor seating with gorgeous cushions and a benevolent golden Buddha for company. A full selection of cocktails, wines and imported and local beers complements the extensive menu. Prices are mid-range and good value with economic banquet options available.

The Thailicious kitchen serves Thai favourites (green curries, wok dishes and the like) as well as traditional Arharn Thai dishes. The menu is peppered with handy cultural and nutritional notes and includes dishes “for the health conscious”, such as the “good luck” larb chicken; a warm salad traditionally prepared for ceremonial occasions. Local barramundi features in soups, choo chee curries and more. Crispy pork belly, a Thai delicacy, is stir-fried in several flavours. Try drunken noodles spiced with chilli and holy basil or the popular tuk tuk chicken – boneless, marinated in coconut milk and herbs, chargrilled and served with sweet chilli dipping sauce. Want an absolute tongue sizzler? If you dare, ask for the jungle curry “Thai hot”. Arharn Thai favours unusual dishes like the bird’s nest entree of spiced quails on crispy egg noodles. The saffron coconut rice is a delicious eyeful as well as mouthful and wonderfully complements the Arharn kang kung vegetables which are a divinely tasting surprise for a green dish. Finish with a sweetener: lemon lime tart or pumpkin and sweetcorn in sweet coconut milk.
