Nirvana Restaurant
Editorial
Nirvana is Darwin's unofficial home of jazz and blues. A quirky little bar and restaurant, it offers a welcome change of pace from the city's typical bar scene. The decor certainly has more personality than your average top-end venue. With dim lighting, a kaleidoscope of furniture options (bamboo alongside traditional wooden booths), eclectic artwork as well as traditional pub decor buried underneath all that, the interior design is certainly inspired. The atmosphere, meanwhile, is as laidback as you could ask for. You'll find a mix of locals and bands milling around by the bar at any given time, or on any given day.
Due to licensing conditions, you'll need to purchase food before you can get stuck into Nirvana's drinks. That's okay though, they offer a selection of cheap and really rather good Indian, Malaysian and Thai items on menu. The actual drinks run the full gamut. While there's obviously plenty of beer on hand, glasses of red start at $6.50 and you can pick up a tropical mango daiquiri from $9.50 - just the thing while you're watching the live bands, or enjoying Darwin's heat out in the courtyard. If you're sick of all the usual Darwin venues, Nirvana has plenty of charm and is well worth a look.
