Editorial

Pruniers has a split personality – or at least that is what its reputation suggests. Diners complain that on weekends the service can be confused and the food so-so, however functions at Pruniers are known to be polished affairs, with the staff, food and wine receiving rave reviews. Pruniers’ placement in the beautiful Chiswick Park is its biggest strength, and dining here feels like a holiday in an English hotel. The restaurant is surrounded by leafy gardens and an expansive lawn – a child-friendly feature that, when combined with the ample parking, makes Pruniers an attractive option for families.

Pruniers serves traditional high tea in the afternoons from Wednesdays to Sundays and, in keeping with the setting, the lunch and dinner menus feature contemporary dishes stamped with a touch of Europe. For example, try the herb-crumbed lamb brains and marinated artichokes, accompanied by a parsley salad and sprinkle of lemon capers that cut through the gamey richness of the brains. The restaurant’s white interiors and broad windows pick up the natural light and the outside tables attract enough sun to invite the use of a wide-brimmed hat. Pruniers has a good wine selection with two dozen wines available by the glass and during Sunday lunch a live jazz band entertains diners.

Without doubt the most inedible, over-priced food I have ever had the displeasure of attempting to consume which all but ruined Christmas Day. Entree consisted of a single prawn, a sad strip of proscuitto and what appeared to be piece of cold, deep-fried calamari. Turkey was served with no gravy or cranberry sauce. I mistakenly opted for a soggy, de-frosted piece of fish that was served with an insulting, single asparagus. Dessert did not improve. I telephoned and wrote to Pruniers - no response
