Wine Odyssey
Editorial
Wine Odyssey, in Sydney's Rocks district, is truly an odyssey. Flouting all things bottled and Aussie, Wine Odyssey can and will take you on a surprising journey filled with boutique Australian wines, or just a glass of Penfolds Grange if you must. The premise is basically this: as many obscure vineyards and varietals as possible, in-house sommeliers on hand for guidance, 12 pages of wine to choose from and all housed in a one-stop, heritage-listed shop. It's all a little overwhelming. Credit must go to the Wine Odyssey crew though - their inspiration was all taken from some alarming statistics. Who knew that boutique and independent winemakers compete for just 10% of the Aussie wine market? Kudos for supporting the local small business.
And it gets better. Wine Odyssey is set up as a DIY tasting room; just swap your credit card for a swipe card and basically run up a tab by serving yourself. The Enomatic wine serving system (where open bottles remain preserved under argon gas) keeps the wine fresh, which means having just a taste of a several hundred dollar bottle of wine is completely fine. And with 44 varieties to choose from, and over 200 available by the bottle, you could quite easily while away an evening (not to mention your bank account).
Wine Odyssey is a place to savour on a Sunday afternoon, or use to improve your tasting skills by taking one of the many courses offered in house. It can be mind boggling, but the service is passionate and helpful without being overbearing. Two thumbs up for independent Aussie winemakers.
