Pancakes on The Rocks
Editorial
Satisfy your pancake craving at any hour of the day at this 24-hour den of devilish delights. Pancakes on The Rocks serves up steaming stacks of pancakes cooked to perfection - with a sweet or savoury twist. Tuck into the pancake parlour's most popular, the Strawberry Patch, which layers fresh strawberries, cream, vanilla ice-cream and strawberry coulis on a pile of buttermilk pancakes. Other sweet options include the Devil's Delight, Bananarama, Macadamia Madness, Blackforest Cherry and Blueberry Heaven. With such decadent dressings at the ready, the standard stack served with whipped butter, cream or ice-cream and maple syrup suddenly seems too conservative. Those with a hankering for the savoury can feast on innovative crepe creations such as the Mexicana - a colourful collage of beef, tomato salsa, cheese, guacamole, sour cream and shallots. And, of course, hungry bellies can always opt for additional pancakes to be added to the pile. The restaurant's menu extends beyond pancakes, however, offering a range of dishes such as the popular pork ribs, gourmet pizzas and salad.
Housed in a brick building at the quiet end of The Rocks, past the pubs and towards the underbelly of the Harbour Bridge, the restaurant's 24-hour opening hours attract the post-drinking crowd en masse. Weekend nights see the queue winding up the stairs and onto the main drag of George Street, so be prepared to practise patience. Once inside, the atmosphere is jolly and the servings large; try to snag a booth and sneak a peek at the overflowing plates flying by. Seating more than 200 people over two levels, Pancakes on The Rocks has been dishing up its decadent fare to Sydney's sweet-tooths since 1975 and has established itself as a firm late-night favourite.
