Art Gallery of New South Wales

Constructed between 1896 and 1909 by Government architect Walter Liberty Vernon, the Art Gallery of NSW was designed to reflect the nineteenth century idea of a classical temple to art and civilizing values.
Amongst the 29,000 or so works, the Gallery's old courts display many of Australia's most distinguished artists, along with two levels of European paintings from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century.
An extension completed in 1970 houses the gallery's dynamic collection of recent works by Australian and international artists and around 4,000 photographic works, from early examples to the most contemporary.
The Asian gallery, which opened in 1988, embraces the great artistic traditions of South, East and Southeast Asia with constantly rotating examples of painting, sculpture and other media.
The Yiribana Gallery, which was the last extension to open in 1994, is a permanent display of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, housing paintings on bark and canvas, as well as prints, photographs, sculptures and installations.
The gallery also has a rich collection of prints, drawings and watercolours and an outdoor sculpture garden.
