Typically lofty city prices in this urban tree house are moderated by consistent service and the soothing smell of the grill.

Editorial

Although Verandah positions itself as a “great value” after-work joint, you'd have to skip a postcode or two to outrun these CBD prices.

Here, you'll find grog costs just a little more than you'd like. But, then again, you'll find that at most places in the hectic business district. And not all of these places are as well-oiled as the Verandah which has been packing 'em in since its opening back in the aughties.

Part of the reason for the place's popularity is consistent, familiar cuisine that is competently prepared and reasonably priced. Quite reasonably priced. In fact, the meals available in the main bar do not exceed twenty bucks. Lunch specials prove outlandishly good. At the time of writing, a Monday promotion offered steaks for nine bucks. Nine bucks! Bless these outrageous, negative-profit pub promotions that lure us in to drink.

Despite the bustle that naturally evolves in a CBD location with nine buck steaks, Verandah retains a kind of sanity. With wood finishes, clean design and a view of some actual foliage, this place beats neighbouring after-work pubs hand down in the tranquillity stakes.

Verandah has the soul of the pub in the much nicer body of a bar.
