The Wynyard Hotel

The Wynyard Hotel’s bar and bistro is probably not the best bar and bistro in the world. But what it lacks in character, it makes up for in cheap beer.

Editorial

You get what you pay for in Sydney, and so when food at the Wynyard Hotel was extremely cheap, I was pretty terrified. I naturally ordered the fish and chips, because if you are afraid of food poisoning, salmonella etc it’s a good idea to choose something that gets incinerated in boiling hot vegetable oil for a while.

I have stayed at a few backpacker’s hotels in Sydney’s CBD and not many have their own bar, let alone one with a rich mahogany countertop and gold plated chandeliers. You could move this entire area onto the Q.E.2 and it would still be a backpacker’s bar. It’s mirthless, untidy, and there’s a couple of beers on tap. But that is exactly what you expect it to be. The beer is cheap and little else matters to those intent on drinking last night’s stay out of their cerebrum.

The fish and chips? They went down. For eleven dollars in Sydney I got what I deserved. However, as mentioned before, the beer is cheap. Thus, the Wynyard Hotel bar/bistro might be just what you need if you’re going for a big night out and want to get started cheap. And you’re right nearby. And you forgot your hip flask. And there’s a violent gang on your side of the street heading towards you.
