The Bar
Editorial
Hotel bars are often met with a sneer, a raised eyebrow, or at the very least, scepticism. But when you're on the road and need a good hard drink, the decor and ambience of your temporary local starts to become all too important. The Bar at the Sydney Four Seasons Hotel is not immune to scrutiny. Indeed it's as sterile as only a warm-hued, stain-proofed, low-couched hotel bar possibly can be. And that's no mean feat. But at face value the staff are courteous, can make the odd suggestion if you're feeling too exhausted to decide, and have a reasonable menu at their disposal so have little chance of putting a step wrong anyway.
The wine list is certainly comprehensive enough and features a good, if safe, mix of mostly Australian wines. If it's all starting to become a blur, the beer options are standard but are at least ice cold. Or, you could just skip straight to the whiskey on ice like most of the business travellers surrounding the bar. The Bar is not all bad and makes a genuine effort to combine intimacy with transience. It's never going to be easy, so credit where credit's due: It's a great spot to meet, have a quick one and leave.
