Tank Stream Alley is a fantastically weird laneway name that was crying out for a super cool bar to inhabit it. Thankfully that's exactly what happened with the gorgeous Tank Stream Bar. Situated below the Establishment Hotel, in a basement space secreted in an out of the way back alley, Tank Stream is the kind of bar that Melbourne excels at, and a much-needed breath of fresh air on the Sydney scene.
The place is well-decked out with beautiful decor, comfy booth seating and it's easy reach for CBD workers. As a result, you do tend to get a suited and booted crowd, but somehow it stays just the right side of stylish without tipping over into pretentious. One key factor in this is the ever-affable and decidedly knowledgeable bar staff who are more than happy to talk you through an extensive wine list,
A dark wood ceiling is offset by warm lighting, tactile fabric finishes and vibrant art on the stone walls. The food's top notch, and there are great lunchtime deals on offer for those sneaking a cheeky extended lunch break out of the office, making Tank Stream all the more welcoming. It's even better after a long hard day's slog at the computer grindstone.
