Sofitel Lounge

This is one lobby bar that won't leave you wanting for bibulous, good times.

Editorial

The Sofitel Lounge at the Sofitel Wentworth hotel in Sydney's CBD is probably not somewhere you'd settle in for a night on the juice. But how many hotel lobby-style lounges are? That said, in serving its purpose the Sofitel does a superb job. It's quiet, discreet and ultimately designed for the discerning drinker en route to somewhere even more upmarket. That's not to say, though, that they don't try and make you stick around. The lounge is open for business more often than it's not, offers a brasserie-style menu and puts on live music for the good-time end of the week.

The booze menu is as all-encompassing as its high-end clientele. Bar staff will happily ad lib the classic cocktails or anything else you care to suggest. Either that or decant your favourite French or Aussie red, Margaret River sauvignon blanc or the house Rhone Valley Gewurztraminer.

Over all, the atmosphere is relaxing if not bordering on a smart waiting room. In the end though if you want a quiet drink in the CBD without getting hounded by the after 5pm crowd or thirsty backpackers, this is certainly a spot to consider. Just be prepared for the 24hour live, stock market coverage.
