Ship Inn

Relying heavily on its location rather than its barnacle-crusted looks, the Ship Inn is hugely popular due to its close proximity to Circular Quay.

Editorial

The Ship Inn can be found at the very end of Pitt St, across the road from Circular Quay. It's nobody's local pub, but probably the preferred regular haunt of many CBD workers. Not a massive bar, just a long simple room with modern timber flooring, spot lighting, stainless steel bar stools and tables overlooking a busy corner. And therefore nothing inside that really sets it aside from many other city bars.

Outside on the plaza space is where most of the action takes place. You'll find a big, noisy crowd out here most evenings, having a drink after work, maybe before a ferry ride home. On the weekends it's a little more sedate, but there's still a good amount of tourists in the area. If you're a visitor to Sydney, this is a good place to pause for a beverage after walking around town. Pull up a chair under the shade cloths and have a beer with the seagulls and the buskers.

On offer are the usual suspects of Australian ales on tap, plus the increasingly popular Japanese Asahi in the distinctive frosted glass. Prices are aimed high - $6.50 for a schooner of Coopers Pale Ale may ensure a flying visit rather than a lengthy session. There's also an excellent wine list, which features a great range of a dozen Australian or New Zealand whites, and a similar selection of reds.

Ship Inn kicks on until very late hours, such as 5am on weekends and around 1am during the week. Cheap pizzas are always a welcome addition to any bar menu, and you'll find a great long list of interesting choices at $13 each. Try the Inferno, with salami, chili, anchovies, olives and Tabasco, but don't expect a kiss when you get home.
