Orbit Lounge Bar
Editorial
After all these years, the revolving wining and dining experience is still a novelty; there's a little child inside everyone that is quite excited by being so high up in the air and spinning in space. The Orbit ambience is design-magazine über-stylish, with a 60's futurist retro vibe, inspired by the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. With the white retro chairs contrasting dramatically with the plush red carpet, I half expect George Jetson to fly in at any moment.
As the sun sets, the plush space warms up from the translucent glow of watermelon pink designer lamps and Campari bottles lined up behind the bar. You really feel like you're at the top of the world, breathing rather rarified pinkish air, but make sure you're dressed for it as they have a strict dress code are not shy about enforcing it.
English-born chef Michael Moore and sommelier James Young have carefully crafted a wine list with a dizzying variety of 180 wines of renowned labels from Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Take a sip of decadent Pol Roger for $25 a glass, before diving into the cocktails. In keeping with the pinkish hues, I went for a Pure Deuce cocktail with organic watermelon juice, Ricard Anise and a hefty shot of Belvedere Vodka. Delicious.
For the beer lovers, there's a very short selection of beers, including James Squire Amber, Lord Nelson Strong Ale and a smattering of imports including Becks, Heinekin and Peroni. Nothing to write home about, but hopefully it'll keep the menfolk satisfied.
Bar food is tasty tapas treats, with a fabulous selection of organic vegetable dips including chilli spiced hummus, organic beetroot and scorched orange. If you need something more, try the chilli-spiced squid or Tunisian style prawns.
This can be a pricey night out, but don't miss the Happy Hour Revolution from 5-6.45pm, Monday to Thursdays with $10 cocktails - count me in on that one.
