Hemmesphere
Editorial
When Hemmesphere opened in 2000 it was an A-lister's dream come true. The frenzy to get on the secret list may be a thing of the past now, but still, the grandness of the place remains.
They say the look of Hemmesphere has been inspired by the Ottoman Empire - and plush it is indeed. Deep reds, purples and gold create a rich and opulent feel, and there's certainly no lack of cushions! You may not see anyone actually lounging around while being hand-fed grapes, but it's probably not out of the question.
If you are here for a cocktail then you're in the right place. The bar staff are, in a word, excellent, and the cocktail list is outstanding. There are fizzes, punches, cobblers and fruit cups. Juleps, swizzles, muddled drinks and fancy drinks - and then there's the connoisseurs club, with delights such as Tommy's Margarita, (direct from Tommy's Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco). Last but not least, is the exotic range of champagne cocktails. Try the Ume Royal - plum wine, sugar, Peychaud's bitters and Chandon NV.
For those after a bite, you will be well pleased with their food menu. Sushi, sashimi and wagyu beef wontons are just a few of the dishes on offer. There's also a supper menu served after 10.30pm.
While it's much easier to get in these days, Hemmesphere has lost none of its appeal. Just be prepared to give your wallet a good workout.
