Fire Station Cafe

places|nsw|sydney|fire%20station%20cafe
Sydney’s old fire station heats up with hungry crowds, effortlessly catering to the weekday lunch brigade.

Editorial

A lack of good cafes on this end of Pitt Street drives a constant flow of workers from the nearby offices to this decently-sized casual eatery. The former fire station has been given a fresh coat of paint, with buff-coloured brick walls and its distinctive green doors, but it still has older, charred wooden ceilings and cracked floor tiles. There is pleasant outdoor seating around the back, the metal tables and chairs shaded by canvas awnings. The alfresco area continues at the side of the building, and diners frequently find themselves standing on the pavement out front, BLT in hand.

Everything here is made in house; the fresh, wholesome food and the seriously fantastic espresso. Come early for breakfasts like muesli with fruit salad, wood-fired toast and a ham or vegetarian omelette. All-day snacks, including cakes, biscuits and pastries, are tempting but consider lingering for a very reasonably-priced lunch. The kitchen does yummy wraps, Turkish sandwiches, burgers and open grills. There are soups in winter and salads for summer, and fresh juices and gourmet breads to lure you in at any time of day.
