Bligh Hotel

Expect a sturdy selection of rums and an unadventurous but titteringly dependable selection of cocktails.

Editorial

The Bligh Hotel is an interesting establishment. Located in the heart of the CBD, you can be sitting out the front in the sun and feel miles from anywhere, and anyone might tell you that your Friday casual wear is inappropriate. Which might explain why there seem to be so many undercover suits here. At first glance the Bligh is a sports bar. And yes, there are several screens and plenty of tap beers. For the uninitiated, this is more than adequate. But for those wanting to delve slightly deeper, the cocktail list and boutique brews available will knock your socks off.

The cocktails seem to fall within two overarching themes: Cuban (with rum) and Gals (with fruit). The Mai Tai is probably the most unusual take on a traditional. Falling into the Cuban category, the Bligh Hotel Mai Tai features English Harbour rum, apricot amaretto and lime. If you're feeling particularly adventurous (or hung over), try the Yellow Bird: English Harbour rum 'frizzled' with Galliano, pineapple and banana.

Ladies, the fruity selection may be more appealing. The English Summer is truly a scorcher in a glass with Cointreau, apple juice and Pimms. There are also delights such as the M (strawberries, vodka, passion fruit and Chandon sparkling) or the Quintessential: Limoncello Guava with Bison Grass vodka.

The crowd is clearly CBD office workers either knocking off early, attending an off-site 'meeting', or simply needing a stiff drink. BTW and FYI, get here after COB Thursday and cocktails are half price.
