The White Horse
Editorial
You can't miss the White Horse, especially at night. It's the one with the big white horse on the roof. *ba-boom-tish* It's certainly a cool bar, but the White Horse has managed to maintain some sense of integrity on the increasingly and desperately cool Crown Street strip - perhaps because it's been there for a few years now. The premise is this: great space in a great place, nice bistro and grazing menus (no $5 steaks here), inoffensive but good DJs, who can turn it up when required, several bars to choose from (including a terrace), and drinks priced beautifully between cheap and grandiose.
For the boozers, there's plenty to choose from - including some superb summer cocktails: The Goddess of Envy is a must if the thermometer hits 30 degrees. It coolly combines green tea liqueur and vodka with fresh mint, fresh lime and pineapple juice - just like a mojito but with the added goodness of green tea and vodka. If you like your drinks pink, try the Billion Ayre. It's a muddle of Bombay Sapphire, pomegranate liqueur, raspberries and lime, topped off with sparkling wine. Yum!
The wine list is very accommodating, featuring mostly Aussie and Kiwi blends. The choice won't be overwhelming, but you'll be hard pressed to not find something good among the 30 or so reds, whites and sparklers. The house White Horse Merlot and Chardonnay are good value and surprisingly drinkable for the price. They have Moet and Veuve on the menu too if you're feeling flush. Come between 6-7pm weekdays for a cheap feed, or any other time for a relaxing but sophisticated night out.
