The Beresford Hotel
Editorial
The only thing that can match the lifespan of some gay venues is the common house fly. It's true. They come and go so fast, always promising to be the next big thing and then, one day three months later, gone! The ones that last tend to have ingrained themselves so much into the queer psyche, that even if they wanted to change, they couldn't - and then there's the Beresford.
Through massive renovations and new owners such as Justin Hemmes (owner of the Ivy and Establishment), whose takeover of the Beresford had people saying it was the end of the Beresford as a gay bar, the old girl has remained faithful. Sure, it's a mixed crowd these days, but, come any night of the week and see how nicely we all play. Fact is, this swanky bar that has a heap of design awards under its belt is a great place to drink.
There's the one-of-a-kind curved dovetail bar and the custom-made everything, from the bricks to the furniture to the light to the ashtrays. There's still the old-school pub element such as the tiled walls and that famous façade, but really, this is one slick and stylish venue. The wine and cocktail lists are impressive, as is their range of local and imported beers.
These days the gay community is more likely to flock here for pre-dinner or pre-clubbing drinks in the public bar, and the spacious courtyard which comes with a DJ, is a favourite for weekend wind downs, especially Beresford Sundays.
