Not in Melbourne?

Mille Vini

Mille Vini means "1000 wines" and although there’s not quite that many on offer, this is still a wine lovers cave of dreams. Italiaphiles apply here.

Editorial

Okay, it's been discussed a lot lately but it's still running hot. We're talking about the Melbourne-style infusion into the Sydney eating and drinking scene. The big welcome wave of Melbourne Italia chic that's poured into Sydney shows no signs of stopping, and among the chief venues responsible for this blessed occurance is that temple of wine: Mille Vini.

This is the team that brought us Pizza e Birra some years back (just an olive stone's throw away down the road) and both venues heavily ooze Italian warmth and chic. While you stand in the queue for a table there's lots to think about. Think wood and stone; sleek and dark. Think heavy leather menus, a long booth and lines of hundreds of wine bottles. Think smart inner city crowd in the thick of Surry Hills hip glory. Think outside of the box: an 8am start Thursdays to Sundays means that breakfast-obsessed Sydneysiders need not wait until after dark to take a trip to their Italian fantasies.

The menu is reasonably extensive and brimming with the usual Oz-Italian suspects such as calamari, arancini, pasta and prosciutto-wrapped anything. And although the crowd mumbles about the hit-and-miss food, at Mille Vini it doesn't seem to matter. Smart heeled folks and wine lovers keep it simple, keep the excellent wine coming and soak up the atmosphere. After all how often do you get to travel to Italy? Thanks to Mille Vini and its relative Pizza e Birra, Crown Street Surry Hills is not a bad substitute.

Meri Harli, October 2010.
