Jazushi Restaurant
Editorial
This jazz-infused Japanese restaurant is a refreshing and quirky change from the karaoke bars, sushi train and teppanyaki establishments usually associated with Japanese cuisine in Australia. Nestled on a quiet corner of Devonshire Street, a leisurely stroll from Central station through the vibrant arts community of Surry Hills, Jazushi showcases a variety of local jazz musicians on a rotating basis from Tuesday till Saturday. The main dining room is bathed in a warm, red glow from the funky, orange light shades and every table sits in the dress circle for the show.
Although sushi and sashimi feature on the menu, there is also a collection of original and inspired creations such as camembert tempura with teriyaki creme sauce, duck teriyaki on a bed of bok choy and topped with julienne of leek, and beef tataki with marinated onion in balsamic jus. Top it off with the divine, yet very un-Japanese chocolate brulee served with vanilla ice-cream. The all-Australian wine list offers a few options by the glass and a beer selection that includes Asahi and Sapporo.
