Bar Cleveland
Editorial
It's a fine line to tread when renovating a place, ensuring you don't alienate the previous crowd by going from dive to super-slick with nary a lick of paint in between. Thankfully, Bar Cleveland keeps just the right side of that bendy line, and has made an awesome job of reimagining itself.
Trendy and cool without being overly imposing, this beautiful old corner building serves up comfy sofas and pool tables with its minimal, art deco chic. There are also the requisite plasma tellies for the big screen footy action, so the lads are happy while those not so sporty can indulge in yum cocktails upstairs.
The latter are particularly good value on Wednesdays, when Happy hour stretches from 6pm till midnight, with $10 tipples. Shouldn't all hours play out like this? The first half of the week means $10 pasta, steak or roast veggie salad too, so there are plenty of bargains to be had.
If you prefer to keep things foot loose and fancy free, Salsa classes heat things up on Monday and Thursday evenings, but you have to book in for eight-week courses at around $150 a pop. Not cheap, but worth it for all those slinky moves you'll be able to pull. All in all, a rather cool place to chill out and escape the rush of the city.
