Ruby L'otel
Editorial
Ruby L'otel is a quiet gem in the reasonably quiet, inner-city Rozelle. Despite being located on one Sydney's busiest thoroughfares, Ruby L'otel amazingly manages to keep the noise to a minimum and instead creates an oasis of cosmopolitan cool for the Rozelle artistes. At first glance, the menu may suggest something of an identity crisis afoot. But on persevering, the mix of Asian fusion and mod-Oz quality bistro meals and snacks on offer is just being considerate - there's something for everyone. And if you can make it on a Tuesday night, you can cash in on their grilled Wagyu beef burger and trivia deal.
The wine list is a small but reasoned mix. Comprised entirely of Australian drops, the number of South Australian vintages featured among the reds would tempt even the most exclusive quaffer. There's only a handful available by the glass, though, so you're best advised to buy in bulk and shell out for the bottle. If you're feeling flush (or actually are), you can luxe it with the Guigal Crozes Hermitage Rouge from the Rhone Valley.
The cocktail menu is again small but considered. With a definite emphasis on fruit and Summery blends, you'll find a few of the classics and a couple of new kids on the block. The simple but delicious Raspberry Mojito is exactly that: a Mojito made with raspberries - it's superb. The Paparazzi is a glamorous take on the Cosmopolitan, mixing cranberry, vodka, Chambord and ginger beer, and quite perfect for summer.
Ruby L'otel is a nice but not too nice a spot for a quiet dinner or a Sunday session. Few bars these days manage to combine the elements of quality bistro, lounge and local boozer with such aplomb.
