Viva Goa
Editorial
Housed in what remarkably resembles a two-storey brick house, this restaurant already turns a few curious heads. However, Viva Goa, which hails from a land that is rich in spices and flavour, can also boast it is the only purely Goan restaurant in Sydney. This means that within its warmly decorated interior, classic fish curries, peri-peri prawns, simmering meat dishes and the alluring aromas of exotic spices abound.
The menu is comprised of dishes not commonly seen in the New South Wales dining beat, so come ready to explore a cuisine that takes influence from its Portuguese colonialist history, its abundant paddy fields and its coastal Indian location. Share a cafreal dish of your choice of meat, stone-ground mint, coriander and green chilli paste which is tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves. For something refreshingly different, order a thick, robust okra curry with poppy seeds, peanuts, coriander and roasted coconut, and a stir-fried mince lamb hotpot with fresh coriander and minty peas. Or, stay safe with the more-ishly delicious “north Indian invasion” butter chicken - a concession to the chef's north Indian wife. Homemade pickles and chutneys add an extra flavour hit, and make sure you order pappadums and chappatis to mop up every last drop of your meal. Try a fresh scoop of orange and coriander sorbet, cinnamon ice-cream with brandied cherries or a coconut pudding with caramelised banana for a sweet end to your Goan adventure.
