Bootleg Bar & Italian Food
Editorial
Small, hidden and a bit of a local secret, Bootleg Bar has been known to be mistaken for a brand new restaurant. In reality it has been around since May 2009 and has quite the following, thank you very much. In fact it’s hard to get a table after 6:00pm. If you’re lucky enough to snag one, enjoy it. This place is pretty special. Fitted out in retro olive and black furniture – including cosy booths – with wood playing a major role, retro-chic black and white photographs (which can be taken home for a price) and vintage cassette players and radios adding a touch of authenticity, it is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.
The inspiration for the cuisine comes from the bootleg-shaped Italy. The menu is constantly evolving but generally involves house-made pasta, chicken, meat, fish and vegetarian dishes as well as daily specials. A favourite with the people in the know – the repeat clientele – is the pampelloni; a giant meatball filled with a melting bocconcini centre that sits on top of spaghetti. Items you may also find on the menu include gnocchi with duck and braised cabbage, lasagne with veal and ricotta and fusilli with wild mushrooms, sage, cream and truffle. But you may not be there for the food. You may have come to sit on a stool and take advantage of the long, well-equipped bar. Who could blame you? The wine list – at least a part of which is displayed on the back wall of the bar – also constantly evolves allowing guests to try drops from around Australia as well as from Italy, Spain and France. A bar menu of snack-y foods like beef carpaccio and crostini with chicken liver will keep you company on your drinking journey.
