Harrigan's Irish Pub

Dare to decline a dram of wine in the grape-heavy Hunter and instead take an ale at this river lodge.

Editorial

Any pub that serves up a brew called Old Fart gets our vote - and probably that of anyone who has ever barbecued wearing a 'Kiss the Chef' apron. To say this place is a little twee is a bit like saying water is a bit wet. Oh. Who cares? For all its self-conscious Ye-Olde-ness and Celtic kitsch, it's a nice place for a nice drink, or seven.

To be frank, you really ought to come for the beer. Despite its culinary ambition, Harrigan's kitchen can deliver inconsistent fare. Make like a sensible drinker, order some food that's hard to bugger up and fix your attention on the dozens and dozens of stouts, ales and lagers.

And, don't forget to lavish a little attention on the locals who cheerily commandeer the Valley's only pub several nights a week.

This place might offer a slightly Disney-fied version of Irish pluck. But, heck - you're in the Hunter. Haven't you had enough tasteful wineries selling varietals you've never heard of packaged in bottles made by a team of discerning iPads? Bring on the leprechauns. And, Miss, make mine an Old Fart.

SM King, June 2010.

give it a miss on weekends if not seeking Bucks Night grousp and yobos, queuing for dining room, queuing to order, queuing for drinks. Must also tolerate drunks outside most of night if staying. Accomm staff disinterested. Undeserving of the 4-star rating. Quality food but obnoxious experience, never to return.

Don't bother, wasteof time and money, staff are rude, queuing for food and two irish beers does not qualify you as an Irish Pub. Never to return
