Want an Irish pub that's more Irish than Dublin? You've just found the mother lode.

Editorial

PJs is like some ancient local in Dublin, Belfast or Cork, only it's much bigger, brighter and, impossibly, even more authentic. One almost expects a good old fellow to be asleep on a bench somewhere and for the regulars to chorus "God bless all travelers" when you walk in. Except that it's on Church Street in Parramatta.

On enquiry this is not so surprising; the Gallaghers apparently shipped over the salvaged contents of a few genuine Irish pubs to fit out this one and its twin of the same name in Drummoyne. No detail has been spared - the ceiling of the main bar even has a faux tobacco tint - and the interiors are full of beautiful dark paneling, fireplaces, raw wood floors and stained glass, but without too many of the old adverts and fake Joycean tomes typical of some Irish themed pubs. Also expect all the mod cons - telly, air con and clean toilets integrate well with the antique fittings and oh-so-Irish nooks and crannies.

This is one big, comfortable place for a Guinness and a bite to eat, with well-designed and separate areas for the intimate chatterers, the seasoned drinkers, the music, the dining and the dreaded office party. It's big; almost big enough to warrant the use of a GPS when meeting up on a weekend evening, but it still manages to retain real character. Food is admirably provided with a long menu of well-priced, traditional pub fare by chef, Ronnie Ghantous, and there's a good range of entertainment - including quiz nights, a poker night plus the standard live bands and DJs. The bar staff are remarkably courteous and a pint of Guinness (none of this schooner nonsense, if you please) is a thoroughly decent $5.50. Sl?inte!
