Paddington Bowling Club
Editorial
Did you know this was here? Just round the corner from the Lord Dudley there's a whole, real-life club! With cheap booze, cheap food, the odd pokie or six and the usual footie on the telly (this is a union venue, if that kind of thing is important to you). But the real attraction is the Barefoot Bowls ?? no, really. Companies book a day's bowling for their stressed-out minions, bucks and hens are treated by their mates, and even a few bowlers of a more traditional demographic have been known to grace the lawns, all with their shoes off.
The shoe thing is down to Gavin and Aaron, the esteemed and executive Lawn Guys. Don't mess with their lawn - it's a lot better kept than any hairdo you've ever had - and one suspects they know each blade of grass by name. Those of a retiring disposition may keep their socks on, but this of course renders them ineligible for the Prettiest Feet Trophy.
Sessions range from $22 per person (the mid-week corporate deal with an instructor) down to $10 on the weekend, which is a bargain for a few hours of what resembles less a pastime for seniors than a sedate form of blitzkrieg. Few things can be more gratifying than relaxing barefoot with a cold ale on a sunny afternoon, just before slamming your boss's bowl into oblivion (you can always get another job).
So, to make a change from being wedged into the beautiful but small Lord Dudley, pop round the corner to discover a secret bit of Paddington; with lovely staff, a decent range of beers on tap , un-scary food and the most fun you can have with your shoes off (or nearly).
