Four In Hand Hotel
Editorial
The Four in Hand is truly a Paddington local's local - mostly because it's so difficult to find. Nestled among the leafy laneways of Eastern Sydney's affluent, Paddington, the Four in Hand is not just a stalwart of the pub scene, but a testament to the fact that sometimes even our most well-healed boozers just like a quiet beer in a normal pub. The style is ye olde but with a mod-oz spin. The art deco bar is huge enough to service the thirstiest rugby team, and local beers run hard and fast. Of course, if you prefer a snazzy boutique brew, there are plenty in the fridge.
The thing that sets the Four in Hand apart from any old English pub is the surprisingly sophisticated wine list. Aussie and Kiwi blends are peppered among a mix of Argentinean, Spanish and Rhone Valley delights, and there are heaps to choose from. The reason for these extraordinary offerings is perhaps the fact that the Four in Hand harbours a bistro that's more than a cut above the rest - only in an unassuming Paddington pub could you sit down for a six-course degustation with matching wines. You'll need an eastern suburbs budget, though, if you want to experience the full gamut of Four in Hand offerings.
It's a great pub if you can navigate your way there, and despite the posh surrounds, it's a relaxing and comfortable spot to spend a sunny Sunday arvo. But gentlemen, please, no thongs.
